Chapter 9

‘Hey, Chloe. Shouldn’t you be at home resting?’ Kat was aware that guilt infused her every word, every movement. Guilt that she’d dropped Gabe’s hand so quickly, guilt that she’d been found by Chloe loved-up in a corner with a guy her friend hadn’t been able to bring herself to meet yet.

‘The midwife said I had to take it easy, so I’m being very careful not to bump into anyone. I’m walking very slowly, and Vaughn’s insisting I’m not allowed to dance and that I sit down every few feet or so. I’m fine. I’m just walking, not stressing. At least I wasn’t.’ Chloe shrugged, her eyes still where their hands had been connected. Slowly her gaze caught Kat’s. ‘You going to tell me what’s going on?’

Kat sighed. Not if she could help it. But she couldn’t hide from this. ‘It’s not what it looks like. I mean—’

Gabe stepped forwards. ‘It’s carnival. Kat and I were dancing. Okay with you?’

‘Why should it bother me? What you do is your own affair, Kat.’ Chloe didn’t even look at Gabe. Hurt was written across her features, and Kat felt so bad that she’d caused it.

She decided to stick with the facts. ‘Turns out, Gabe owns Sunny Days.’

‘Does he?’ Finally Chloe looked at him, unease in her eyes. ‘Do you?’

Gabe nodded. ‘Yes.’

‘And is that important or relevant to anything?’ Chloe looked from Gabe to Kat.

‘Not really. No, I guess it isn’t. But it means he comes into work.’ Kat tried to make it sound like it wasn’t a big deal, but it was. He was. As was the fact that he was her boss. This was all getting too complex to get her head round. ‘So I’ve… well, I’ve seen him. A bit.’

But Chloe just looked distressed. ‘I actually don’t know what to say now. You were holding hands with my half-brother, as if that’s a normal thing to do. Two weeks ago you said he was a scammer and agreed he could be trouble. This week you’re all over him like a rash.’

‘Things change, Chloe.’ Thank God her friend didn’t know about the kiss. She wondered what Gabe was thinking of her right now. What she’d thought of him last week had been erased by getting to know him, but even so, she’d dropped his hand like a hot brick the second she saw Chloe. That was going to take some getting over. She tried to make things better. ‘And I’m not sorry.’

‘I’m not asking you to be sorry, Kat.’ But Chloe stepped back, and Kat shuddered at the distance between her and her friend. She’d rarely seen Chloe so disarmed. Perhaps once, when she was stood up at the altar. ‘I’m just wondering what’s going on and why you haven’t said anything to me about the fact that a) you’ve seen him, and b) you’re more than friendly with him. Why be so secretive? It’s not like you.’

It felt, to Kat, as if she’d had no choice in liking him. He’d grown on her.
