Chapter 9
âHey, Chloe. Shouldnât you be at home resting?â Kat was aware that guilt infused her every word, every movement. Guilt that sheâd dropped Gabeâs hand so quickly, guilt that sheâd been found by Chloe loved-up in a corner with a guy her friend hadnât been able to bring herself to meet yet.
âThe midwife said I had to take it easy, so Iâm being very careful not to bump into anyone. Iâm walking very slowly, and Vaughnâs insisting Iâm not allowed to dance and that I sit down every few feet or so. Iâm fine. Iâm just walking, not stressing. At least I wasnât.â Chloe shrugged, her eyes still where their hands had been connected. Slowly her gaze caught Katâs. âYou going to tell me whatâs going on?â
Kat sighed. Not if she could help it. But she couldnât hide from this. âItâs not what it looks like. I meanââ
Gabe stepped forwards. âItâs carnival. Kat and I were dancing. Okay with you?â
âWhy should it bother me? What you do is your own affair, Kat.â Chloe didnât even look at Gabe. Hurt was written across her features, and Kat felt so bad that sheâd caused it.
She decided to stick with the facts. âTurns out, Gabe owns Sunny Days.â
âDoes he?â Finally Chloe looked at him, unease in her eyes. âDo you?â
Gabe nodded. âYes.â
âAnd is that important or relevant to anything?â Chloe looked from Gabe to Kat.
âNot really. No, I guess it isnât. But it means he comes into work.â Kat tried to make it sound like it wasnât a big deal, but it was. He was. As was the fact that he was her boss. This was all getting too complex to get her head round. âSo Iâve⦠well, Iâve seen him. A bit.â
But Chloe just looked distressed. âI actually donât know what to say now. You were holding hands with my half-brother, as if thatâs a normal thing to do. Two weeks ago you said he was a scammer and agreed he could be trouble. This week youâre all over him like a rash.â
âThings change, Chloe.â Thank God her friend didnât know about the kiss. She wondered what Gabe was thinking of her right now. What sheâd thought of him last week had been erased by getting to know him, but even so, sheâd dropped his hand like a hot brick the second she saw Chloe. That was going to take some getting over. She tried to make things better. âAnd Iâm not sorry.â
âIâm not asking you to be sorry, Kat.â But Chloe stepped back, and Kat shuddered at the distance between her and her friend. Sheâd rarely seen Chloe so disarmed. Perhaps once, when she was stood up at the altar. âIâm just wondering whatâs going on and why you havenât said anything to me about the fact that a) youâve seen him, and b) youâre more than friendly with him. Why be so secretive? Itâs not like you.â
It felt, to Kat, as if sheâd had no choice in liking him. Heâd grown on her.
